A digital signature is a cryptographic method used to verify the authenticity, integrity, and origin of electronic documents, messages, or data. It functions as the digital counterpart of a handwritten signature, providing a reliable way to confirm that digital content has not been altered and that it comes from a verified source.

Digital signatures rely on a pair of cryptographic keys: a private key, kept confidential by the signer, and a public key, shared openly for validation. These keys are generated using a digital signature algorithm.

The creation and verification process of a digital signature generally involves:

Hashing: The digital document is processed through a cryptographic hash function, producing a unique, fixed-length hash value (also called a message digest) that represents the contents of the document.

Signing: The signer encrypts this hash value using their private key, generating the digital signature. This links the document’s fingerprint to the signer in a secure way. Any changes to the document would create a different hash, making the signature invalid.

Verification:The recipient uses the sender’s public key to decrypt the digital signature and retrieve the original hash. They then apply the same hash function to the received document. If both hash values match, it confirms that the document is authentic and unmodified.
